TurboTest’s typing speed test measures how many words per minute you can type, and how accurately. Choose a timed or word-count test, start typing, and get your WPM, accuracy, consistency and the keys you miss most. Words keep coming as you type, so you’ll never run out, and your best scores are saved on your device.

How to take the typing test

  1. Choose a test. Pick a timed test (30 seconds to 3 minutes) or a word-count test (25 to 200 words). Turn on punctuation or numbers for a harder test.
  2. Start typing. The timer starts with your first key press. Each word turns green when you type it correctly, or red if you make a mistake.
  3. Fix mistakes as you go. Press Backspace at the start of a word to step back into a red word and correct it.
  4. Read your results. See your words per minute, accuracy, consistency, a speed graph and the keys you missed most.
  5. Beat your best. Your best score for each setting is saved on your device. Repeat the same words or start a new test to improve it.

What your results mean

What’s a good typing speed?

Most people type roughly 35 to 45 words per minute. Over 60 is quick, 80 or more puts you among fast typists, and competitive typists can go well past 120.

Speed only counts if it’s accurate, so aim for 95% accuracy or better before chasing a higher WPM.

How WPM is calculated

A “word” is counted as five characters, including spaces, so long and short words even out. Your WPM is the characters in correctly typed words, divided by five, per minute.

Raw WPM uses everything you typed. Accuracy compares correct key presses with all key presses.

Tips to type faster

Timed or word-count tests

Timed tests show how fast you can keep going: 30 seconds suits a quick check, while 2 or 3 minutes is a truer measure of your everyday speed. Word-count tests give you a fixed amount of text to finish as fast as you can.

Punctuation and numbers make any test harder and more like real writing. Each combination keeps its own personal best.

Frequently asked questions

Is the typing speed test free?

Yes. It’s free to use, with nothing to sign up for or download.

What is a good typing speed?

Most people type roughly 35 to 45 words per minute. Over 60 is quick, and 80 or more puts you among fast typists. Accuracy matters as much as speed, so aim for 95% or better.

What’s the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

WPM only counts words you typed correctly. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, including mistakes, so it’s always the same or higher.

Does the test save my results?

Your best score for each setting is saved in your browser on this device only. What you type isn’t sent anywhere. You can also download an image of any result to share.

Can I practise with punctuation and numbers?

Yes. Turn on punctuation for capital letters, commas, full stops and quotes, and numbers for digits mixed into the words. Each combination keeps its own personal best.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, but it works best with a physical keyboard. On-screen keyboards are slower, so expect lower scores.
